While we are not currently hiring paid research assistants, we are always pleased to hear from students interested in becoming involved in research.
We welcome inquiries from undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, and others seeking meaningful research experience in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Undergraduate Research
Opportunities may be available to volunteer on existing projects or to complete Directed Studies, Practicum Placements, or Honours Thesis projects with the Applied Justice Lab.
Graduate Students
Since KPU is primarily an undergraduate university, graduate students still have opportunities to be co-supervised with one of our collaborators at universities with graduate programs.

Scholarship Opportunity for Indigenous Students at KPU
The Bernadette Monchalin Endowed Award for Indigenous Justice supports Indigenous students pursuing justice-related studies at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Established in 2017, this scholarship honours Dr. Lisa Monchalin's grandmother and is dedicated to fostering future generations of Indigenous leadership and scholarship.

Fall 2026 Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Applications are now open for an undergraduate research opportunity with Dr. Lisa Monchalin, Canada Research Chair in Wrongful Convictions and Director of the Applied Justice Lab.
ARTS 3993 is a three-credit undergraduate research course that offers one student the opportunity to join the Applied Justice Lab and contribute to research examining miscarriages of justice in Canada.
Working alongside Dr. Monchalin, a Research Manager, and two Graduate Level Research Assistants, the successful applicant will gain experience conducting research while developing advanced research, writing, and analytical skills. Students will participate in all stages of the research process, from literature reviews and research ethics to qualitative interviews, data analysis, and knowledge mobilization.
A distinguishing feature of this opportunity is the potential to co-author scholarly publications with the research team and help transform research into real-world impact through opinion pieces, commentaries, and action briefs that inform policy and practice.
This is an exceptional opportunity for students considering law school, or graduate studies in criminology or public policy.
